Emergency 101: Who’s Responding – Part 1

Clymer Township hosts Emergency Responders Appreciation Day

by Benton Best – September 11, 2018

We all know the importance of the 911 system and the ability for people to call for help when something goes wrong. Because of that the 911 system has been carefully regulated and monitored for many years to ensure that callers get the best quality service they can.

But how well does the system work after the 911 call for service has been dispatched to the Emergency Medical Services and fire departments? In Tioga County, the number of volunteer emergency responders has been declining.

That’s why the citizens of Clymer Township, led by their Township Supervisors, organized an Emergency Responders Appreciation Day on Saturday, September 8th, 2018 to honor volunteer career and emergency responders who serve the area, and possibly recruit some new ones.

But how bad is the supply of volunteer emergency responders?

The Department of Community and Economic Development predicts that, by the year 2025, there will be no volunteer emergency responder left in the entire commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Tioga County’s Fire Coordinator, Kevin Kulish, spoke about this at the event. (Watch today’s video to learn more!)

We can all imagine how important volunteer emergency medical services and firefighting personnel are, but if there’s a shortage in personnel to respond, who is responding to our calls for service?

The answer is that existing volunteers are being stretched incredibly thin. Their incredible call to action keeps them serving their community, but for how long?

This situation is becoming more and more dire each and every day in Pennsylvania, but there may be answers.

The Tioga County Commissioners now offer an opportunity for Tioga County residents to take the $900 EMT class 100% free as long as students become fully certified afterwards. What an opportunity!

At the local level, other incentives are available as well. At their emergency responder appreciation day, Clymer Township Supervisor Bill Plummer explained what efforts they’re taking to recruit and retain volunteers. (Watch today’s video to learn more!)

Recruiting more volunteers is definitely important and we applaud Clymer Township and the Tioga County Commissioners for their initiative.

How can we retain volunteers once they’ve come in the door? How can we ensure that our system is working as efficiently as it can be?

Stay tuned for Part II of this series next month when we talk more about how we can improve our emergency services system here in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. What’s in the works already, and what work still needs to be done.
